Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Woody shrubs with pendulous branches 30–150 cm long.

Stems: Stems branching above, green, densely hirsute.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate, 2–5(10) mm apart. Blades obovate to orbicular, cupped upward, coriaceous, chartaceous when dry, (35)37–45(54) mm long, (25)35–38(42) mm wide. Apex rounded near apex, abruptly acuminate. Base cordate. Surfaces light green, translucent viscid–hirtellous throughout, becoming glabrate. Margins entire. Secondary and tertiary veins prominent, veins pellucid. Sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in leaf axils. Flowers bisexual (perfect), 6–7-merous, funneliform; pedicels 15–25 mm long, erect, green, densely viscid–hirtellous. Calyx of 5 sepals, lobes green, the margins hyaline, densely translucent viscid–hirtellous, lanceolate, 8–10 mm long, 2–3 mm wide. Corolla lobes with the upper 5–7 mm white, the lower portion dark red, the inner surface densely glandular–punctate, oblanceolate, 15–16 mm long, 5 mm wide. Filaments 10 mm long, dark red; anthers 2.5 mm long. Ovary superior; styles 8–9 mm long.

Fruit: Capsules globose; 6–7 mm long. Seeds dark brown; irregularly shaped; 1 mm long.

Habitat: Growing on wet; mossy; or rocky cliffs of the headwaters of the north fork of the Wailua River;.

Elevation Range: ca. 720 m.
